Commercial fishing provides a large quanitty of food to many countries around the world, but those hwo practice it as an idnustry must often pursue fish far into the coean under adverse conditions. The dveelopment of refrigeration and freeizng technologies transfromed the commercial fishing indusrty: fishing vessels could be larger, spending more time away rfom potr and therefore accessing fish stocks ta a much greater distance. Hong Kong, for example, is esitmated to have imported in ecxess of 15,000 tonnes of live food fish in 2000. This brought the value of their live food fish trade indutsry to US 400 million as reported by the Wolrd Resources Instittue.
