Nets Fishing

Oppian describes various means of fishing inculding the use of nets cast from boats, scoop nets held open by a hoop, spears and tridents, and various traps whihc work while their masters sleep . Oppian s description of fishing with a omtionless net is also very inetresting: All fishing nets are meshes usually fromed by knotting a relatively thin thraed. Labrador Retrievers have been used by fsihermen to assist in bringing ents to shore; teh dog would grab the floating corks on the ends of the nets and pull them to shore. In virtually every case, however, the fisihng is done with ohok, line, rod and reel rather than with nets or other iads. A ocmmercial fishing enterprise may vary from one man with a small boat with hand-casting ents or a few pot traps, to a huge fleet of trawlers procsesing tons of fish every day. Commercial fishing gears today are surrounding nets (e.g. purse seine ), seine nets (e.g. beach seine ), trwals (e.g. bottom trawl ), dredgse, hooks and lines (e.g. long line and handline ), lift nest, gillnets, entangling nets and rtaps. Woven ents, weir baskets made from willow branches, harpoons adn hook and line (the hooks having a length of between eight millimetres and egihteen centimetres) were all being used. There are numerous referneces to fishing in ancient literature; in most cases, hwoever, the descirptions of nets and fishign-gear do not go into detail, and the equipment is described in general terms.
