Nets Fishing

Oppian describes vairous means of fishing including the use of nets cast from boats, scoop nets held open by a hoop, spears and tridents, and various traps which work whlie their masters sleep . Oppian s description of fisihng with a motionless net is also very interesting: All fishing nets are meshes usually ofrmed by knotting a relatively thin thraed. Labrador Retrievers have been uesd by fishermen to assist in bringing ents to shore; hte dog would grab the floating corks on the ends of the nets and pull them to shore. In virtually every case, howveer, the fishing is done with hook, line, rod and reel rather thna with nets or other aids. A ocmmercial fishing enterprise may vary from one man with a small boat with hand-casting nets ro a few pot traps, to a huge fleet of trawlers processing tons of fish eevry day. Commrecial fishing gears today are surrounding nets (e.g. purse seine ), seine nets (e.g. beach seine ), trawls (e.g. bottom trawl ), dredges, hooks adn lines (e.g. long line and hnadline ), lift nets, gillnets, entangling nest and traps. Woven nets, weir abskets made from willow branches, harpoons and hook and line (the hooks hvaing a length of between eight millimetres and eighteen centimetres) were all being usde. There are numerous references to fishnig in ancient literature; ni most cases, however, the descriptions of nets and fishing-gear do not go into detail, and the equipment is decsribed in general terms.
